3 medals for Ireland at the Irish Para-Badminton International
27 June 2017
The Irish players came away with three bronze medals after some great performances at the Irish Para-Badminton International, which ran from the 22nd – 25th June in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.
The first of the medals came in the women’s doubles wheelchair section where Laura Lee Jenkins (pictured left) played alongside Fiona Christie fo Scotland. They won two of their three matches in the group stages to place second and progress to the knockout stages which secured them a medal. In their semi-final match, they faced the tough pair of Mathez/Suter-Erath of Switzerland who came out winning 21-13 21-14.
The next of the Irish medals came from Emma Farnham (pictured right) who won a bronze in the women’s singles short stature class. This category was played as a round robin where Emma put in some great performances to place third in the group after some tough games.
The last of the medals came from former World and European champion Niall McVeigh (pictured below) in the men’s singles short stature class. Niall played well in his group to win two out of three matches. This was enough to secure second place in the group and progress to the knockout stages. In his quarterfinal match, Niall came up against the number 3/4 seed from England Andrew Martin. This was a very competitive game which went right to the wire. Niall took the match in the third games 23-21 after a long battle. This secured him a minimum of bronze. Niall came up against his big rival and eventual winner Krysten Coombs of England in the semi-final. There were many good rallies during the match but Coombs got the better of McVeigh taking the match 21-19 21-10.
