A World Junior Medal In Nguyen’s Reach
19 October 2017
After winning his round of 16 match Nhat Nguyen is only one win away from securing what would be Ireland’s first ever medal at a World Junior Championships.
With a massive 256 draw in the men’s singles at the World Junior Championships Nhat has had to overcome 4 opponents to get to the quarterfinals. In his round of 16 match he took on the number 13 seed Kartikey Gulshan Kumar of India. Nhat had a slow start to the match with Kumar playing well he managed to take the first game 21-18. In the second Nhat was geared to go and started to play more freely putting pressure on the Indian taking the game 21-15. In the final game, Nhat had plenty left in the tank while Kumar could not keep up with the offensive shots Nhat was bringing to the match. Nhat battled to take that game 21-13 and clinch the match booking his place in the last 8 of the event. Nhat is one of only two European players left in the event. Tomorrow Nhat will play unseeded Chinese player Zhengze Gao who has already taken out the number 3 and 11 seeds from the event.
Nhat also was playing in the men’s doubles event with partner Paul Reynolds. They won their opening round against Vietnamese players Le/Nguyen 21-11 21-11. In the next round they came up against the stronger pair of Kwek/Man of Malaysia. This game was hard fought in both games by Nhat and Paul but the experience of the Malaysian pair shone through as they took the match in two games 21-18 21-13.
